If you enjoy living close to a little bit of everything, Lakewood Ranch may be the place for you! Lakewood Ranch is an award-winning Master Planned Community ranked number one in the nation for its “Green Community”, and truly has something for each of its more than 20,000 residents. The land that is now Lakewood Ranch was originally purchased by Milwaukee businessman John Shroeder in the early 1900’s. In 1922 the Uihlein family, founders of the Schlitz Brewing Company, acquired more than 48 square miles of land east of present-day I-75. This property, called the Schroeder-Manatee Ranch (SMR) still continues timber, ranching and agricultural activities. In 1994 development began on more than 17,500 acres of this property to create Lakewood Ranch.
Today there is a beautiful Main Street with local boutiques, wonderful restaurants, a quaint movie theater showing new and independent films, and a putt-putt golf that sits on a lake. Right across the street is the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center with offices for each medical field and a Women’s Center, a hospital and an Emergency Room. There are office buildings with more than 1,200 businesses, three golf courses, a well-known polo field, public and private schools, colleges, churches, grocery stores, and shopping centers that have helped Lakewood Ranch become its own thriving mini-metropolis. For those that love the outdoors, there are over 150 miles of serene walking paths that wind all the way through and around this great community. On your walk you can enjoy the landscape containing live oaks, pristine lakes and ponds, and a plethora of wildlife living in their natural preserves. The villages in Lakewood Ranch range from condos to mansions and everything in between.
